“i stood at the border, stood at the edge and claimed it as central. i claimed it as central, and let the rest of the world move over to where i was.”
– toni morrison
i am a february-born aquarius, which is to say that i am a bit of a know-it-all, though deep down i know very little. i am always trying to remedy this by being the kind of writer that reads widely, that scribbles my thoughts on the margins of books, and prints out articles and pastes them in my journal so i can scribble on those margins, too. i am the kind of reader whose thoughts shift as i grow, as i read and consume more and more.
when i crack open a book i’ve read years ago, i marvel at the thoughts of the me that once was. my marginalia interests me almost as much as the content of the book does, as i wrestle with what i once thought, what i think now.
i am the kind of thinker who is always wrestling with something, always discoursing, always having an opinion, whether publicly on the Platform Formerly Known as Twitter, or in private with my friends, or in my heart, only in my heart. my anxious brain is always on, always considering and re-considering and having a view and changing that view and changing that view.
i am the kind of person whose name you might not remember on the first meeting, or even the second, but over time my personality and my convictions become stronger to you, clearer, and it’s like you’ve known me your whole life. once unnamed, once unknown, now familiar.
this newsletter is that, in the written form. it’s me, trying to make sense of myself by trying to make sense of the books i read, the tv/films i watch, the music i listen to, the world we live in. it’s me, trying to reveal myself to you, trying to crack open my skull and show you what goes on in my head, hoping to see what’s in yours.
